These are my answers.

1. Name: Jennifer Savage
4. How long have you been in the area? 10 years
5. What brought you here? school, ocean, wanting to raise the kids in a good place
6. Where are you from originally? SoCal desert
7. What is your favorite genre of music? good
8. What are you most listening to now? “modern rock” because I work at KSLG… otherwise, Bon Iver, Lila Nelson, Cold War Kids, KEXP podcasts and always rockin’ The Cops’ Free Electricity in the car.
9. Have you ever made a mixed tape? Yes, but I’ve had way more made for me.
10. How often do you frequent out? once/twice a week
11. Where do you spend the most time when you go out? Alibi, Jambalaya, Humboldt Brews
12. What is your favorite venue? If they differ, why? I love the Alibi because it was the only place rocking when I started as Scene Editor, because Ian consistently books great bands, the food is always good, the bartenders are cool, but in a don’t-mess-with-me way, and it’s nice and dark like a bar should be. Worth noting: since Rose and Ricardo took over the Jambalaya, it’s been a solid venue, plus the drinks are tasty. Also, the new version of Hum Brews is great-looking with yummy food, but the lack of real cocktails is an occasional deal-breaker as I’m not a beer drinker.
13. List 3 to 5 of your favorite local bands. That’s like asking me to list 3 to 5 of my favorite children.
14. What is your favorite local album? This would be a long list. Read the paper, I guess.
15. What’s the best local band name? Tyler Flame and the Ellipses
16. What’s the worst local band name? Rock Shop hahahahahaha

I am not picking any best bands. (See #13.)

23. What’s the best venue? See above.
24. What’s the worst venue? Bayside Grange. It’s a fine place for many things, live music not being one of them, unless the band happens to be the Delta Nationals.
25. If you could change one thing about the local scene, what would it be? I would increase the cash flow to the people who work hard keeping it going.
26. If you could give the middle finger to any local act, genre, or personality, who or what would it be? Oh, I wouldn’t do that. First, I have a reputation for being nice that needs upholding; second, it’s too small a town.

Jasmine “April O” Loucks wrote @

1. Name: Jasmine Loucks, but you can call me April if you want.

2. Age: 19

3. Sex: of the female type

4. How long have you been in the area?: All my life.

5. What brought you here?: I think the better question is what’s kept me here.

6. Where are you from originally?: Well, technically I lived in Trinidad ’til I was 2 and then we moved to Arcata, but I don’t think that really counts for anything.

7. What is your favorite genre of music?: Erm… it really varries. One day I’m jamming to ska and the next I’m enjoying Gustav Holst’s The Planets. To simplify: pretty much everything but techno, which I enjoy but don’t listen to unless someone else puts it on.

8. What are you most listening to now?: Well, currently Blind Gaurdian, but lately I’ve been listening to loads of Lemon Demon, Barenaked Ladies, and loads of ska.

9. Have you ever made a mix-tape?: I worked on one once but I never finished it.

10. How often do you frequent out?: I usually go out a couple times a week, but these days I’ll attend a show about every week and a half.

11. Where do you spend most of your time when you go out?: I go to more house shows than anything these days, as given my age not many places let me in, but you can find me at The Placebo almost always.

12. What is your favorite venue?: At this point there’s not really any competition in this area for me, it’s gotta be The Placebo. Not just because I’m involved, but I can also pretty much count the other all-ages venues these days on one hand.

13. List 3 to 5 of your favorite local bands: I think they’ve almost all broken up by now, but of all time it’s probably The Pro Heroes, Strix Vega, The Rubberneckers, Que La Chinga, and The Dean.

14. What’s your favorite local album?: that really varries depending on the day it is. Right now I think based on my mood it’s probably “Watch Me Slide” by The Dean, mostly for the last track.

15. What’s the best local band name?: Magilicutty and the Flying Fishsticks. It’s pretty hard to top that. (not that many people remember this group)

16. What’s the worst local band name?: No contest here, it’s definitely Tsu Tain Guu Faitaa.

17. Who’s the best punk band?: Currently Sick Bitch is my favorite, but I think if you’re counting all the bands I’ve seen definitely The Dean.

18. Metal?: DNR. I say that without hesitation.

19. Rock?: Probably The Rubberneckers.

20. Hip-hop?: Uh… I don’t know much about the local hip-hop scene, but the closest I can think of that I really love is Double Threat.

21. Reagae?: I don’t listen to much reagae, but my step-dad just loves Ishi Dube.

22. Other?: best other band is The Cutters, just because I can’t go through a listing of who rocks without mentioning them.

23. What’s the best venue?: The Placebo for longevity, all-ages(ness), and because I love it.

24. What’s the worst venue?: my least favorite that I’ve been to was Indigo, just for the horrible, awful sound done when Strix Vega played in December ’06.

25. If you could change one thing about the local scene, what would it be?: I would say more all-ages venues but I know that the all-ages scene will rise again only by working, not wishing. So my wish is for more ska!

26. If you could give the middle finger to any local act, genre, or personality, who or what would it be?: I wish I could give the finger to the stupid pricks who keep trashing the all-ages venues (most recently the , but without knowing who they are it’s a bit hard.

Ok, I’ll bite.

1. Name: Ross Rowley

2. Age: 47

3. Sex: M

4. How long have you been in the area?
47 years.

5. What brought you here?
Family moved here in 1881.

6. Where are you from originally?
Willow Creek

7. What is your favorite genre of music?
Western Swing or Rockabilly, although
British Pub-Rock fits somewhere in there, too.

8. What are you most listening to now?
It depends on my mood. But, as a general rule…country music. But, not the contemporary stuff.

9. Have you ever made a mixed tape?
Boxes and boxes full of mix tapes.

10. How often do you frequent out?
Twice a month.

11. Where do you spend the most time when you go out? Either the Bayside Grange, The Eureka Elks Lodge or and oddball of venues up and down the coast.

12. What is your favorite venue? If they differ, why? As far as playing music, the Eureka Moose Lodge. It by far has the most old-timey feel. Authentic dance hall with incredible acoustics on stage. Remember, I’ve played nearly every bar in existence in Northern California. Although, interestingly enough, never the Alibi.

13. List 3 to 5 of your favorite local bands.
I just can’t rightfully do that. Everyone is equal. (Was that a cop out?)

14. What is your favorite local album?
The Polka Dots, recorded in the early 1970’s at the Weott Redman’s Hall is tops. I ain’t kidding.

15. What’s the best local band name?
Slackjaw or Scotch Wiggly. I did like Strangers With Candy.

16. What’s the worst local band name?
TBA…you see them listed in the newspaper quite often.

17. Who was the best punk band? Agent 86
(The first wave in Humboldt around 1980)

18. Metal? Not a clue.

19. Rock? Way out of touch, here.

20. Hip-Hop? Hmmm, age causing problems.

21. Reggae? Not local, but Groundation from Sonoma.

22. Other? The Roadmasters, Twisted Geezer, Rooster McKlintock, The Humboldt Ragtime Band, The Eureka Symphony, Dave Wilson (solo), and lots and lots and lots of others.

23. What’s the best venue?
Depends on the mood. The Bayside Grange for community gatherings, the Riverwood Inn for that nighttime honky-tonk feel of dimlights, thick smoke and loud, loud music. The Farmer’s Market for the daytime people.

24. What’s the worst venue?
A flatbed truck in a parade.

25. If you could change one thing about the local scene, what would it be?

Go back to starting music at 9pm and bands having to learn more than just one 45 minute showcase set.

26. If you could give the middle finger to any local act, genre, or personality, who or what would it be?

That middle finger would be to all of the scurrilous promoters or bar owners who stiffed bands out of their earned income.
