Josh Duke: Keeping the rock’n'roll flame alight

Who will save Rock’n’Roll? No really though, who’s gonna do it? Since Kurt Cobain made his grand exit we’ve been set adrift as no king (or queen) takes up the rock crown while MTV forgot somewhere during the last 10 years that they’re supposed to play music videos. Every couple of years critics will come along and try to say that such-and-such band is the next rock god that will bring the music industry out of its slump and convince us all that there’s something that’s more worthwhile to listen to than whatever phase of rock happens to be in revival this week. Derby time!

EUREKA – The Humboldt Roller Derby League presents their first public bout, Saturday, May 24 at Redwood Acres’ Franceschi Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the battle between The Cold Hearts and The Hot Tempers starts at 8 p.m.

The event is all ages. Beer, wine and snacks will be available for sale. Tickets are $7 adults, $3 kids six-to-13. Children five and under are free. Tickets are available at The Works or through brownpapertickets.com/event/33357. Proceeds benefit Humboldt County Domestic Violence Services.

Halftime entertainment includes Hell Razors, the Roller Derby Dance Squad.  A Roller Derby afterparty takes place at Aunty Mo’s with special “Derby” drink specials. More information through humsully@gmail.com, (707) 499-4749 or humboldtrollerderby.com.

Jennifer Savage on the Redwood Jazz Alliance

ARCATA – Like many ideas, the Redwood Jazz Alliance sprang from a combination of fatigue and dinner, founding member Eric Neel explained. Along with some other jazz aficionados Neel had traveled, once again, to the Bay Area for a show. Tired of the driving and the expense, they wondered, why not form their own organization and bring world-class jazz to Humboldt County.
