Josh Duke: Bonus Tracks – Dec. 30, 2009
Y’ou know, when we’ve hit an era of war, high gas prices, scarce commodities, and a global economic meltdown that scares the bejeezus out of over the most stalwart of the white-haired, money-grubbing elite, you would think pop music would be better by now. Until now, history has shown us such; 12 years of conservative administrations and paltry, for-nothing military exercises in a myriad of third-world nations thankfully had the added side effect of giving us a reason to like Nirvana and Sonic Youth. The converse also seemed true, as eight years of Slick Willie gave rise to a new crop of boy bands, teen pop stars and soaring subscriptions to Tiger Beat. If I thought it would have helped to avoid all that, I would have told my parents to vote for Bob Dole. Read the rest of this entry »
Jennifer Savage: It’s not a true celebration without ‘The Glasnost Family’
They’re in your neighborhood, these wacky Glasnost musicians. They’ve absquatulated from numerous countries already and now they need a place to call home.
To that end, the ensemble – all vaguely related to each other – is determined to win your approval. This may seem suspicious at first, but if the Glasnosts’ efforts to entertain you and bring you into their holiday cheer doesn’t win you over, your heart must have solidified into ice a long time ago. Ross Rowley, take two… from the Dec. 2, 2009 print edition
(Not sure why the prior attempt glitched. This seems to work. – JS/Eye Scene Ed.)
Why don’t band and orchestra students continue playing their instruments after high school or college?
Recently, I found out a great number of my peers, or people I have come to admire, played a musical instrument throughout school. Like me, a few chose to play the baritone horn which; a.) guarantees an elevated nerd status and b.) places you in that mystery social class within the band. You’re not cool enough to be with the Ray-Ban wearing hipsters who commandeer the trumpet section, too cool to sit with the geeky 4.0 GPA bookworm girls in the woodwind section and not hip enough to socially compete with the budding Charlie Parkers in the saxophone section. Not to mention your lack of Buddy Rich-like swagger displayed among the drummers in the band. Female baritone horn players, on the other hand, possessed more cool than the entire lot. Why is that?

“Take it away, Leon!” So went the call from Bob Wills to his famed steel guitar player, Leon McAuliffe. But, that shout out for Leon to play his solo had a much farther reaching impact than just within the Texas Playboys band. Read the rest here.
